What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy, also known as a lip or tongue tie release, is a simple procedure that can have a significant impact on a person's life. This minimally invasive treatment involves cutting or releasing the frenulum, a small strip of tissue located in the center of the upper lip and tongue. The frenulum plays a crucial role in maintaining proper lip and tongue positioning, but when it becomes tight or restrictive, it can cause difficulties with eating, speaking, and oral hygiene.

The most common reason for a frenectomy is a condition called tethered oral tissue (TOT). TOT occurs when the frenulum is excessively tight and restricts the movement of the lips and tongue. Symptoms of TOT include:

  • Experiencing difficulties with latching onto the breast or bottle.
  • Facing challenges with breastfeeding.
  • Encountering issues with drinking from a cup.
  • Experiencing communication challenges in verbal interactions.
In some cases, the frenulum can cause an incorrect bite and misalignment of the teeth.

The Benefits of a Frenectomy

A frenectomy provides a significant advantage by improving speech and eating patterns. When the frenum is overly tight, it restricts the movement of the tongue, resulting in difficulties with speech and challenges while eating. By removing the frenum, the tongue gains more freedom to move, leading to enhanced speech and improved eating abilities.

Undergoing a frenectomy offers the potential to enhance oral hygiene. An excessively tight frenum can create a gap between the teeth and gums, making proper cleaning difficult. By eliminating the frenum, this gap is eliminated, making brushing and flossing easier and reducing the likelihood of developing gum disease.

A frenectomy is a solution to alleviate pain and discomfort caused by a tight frenum. When the frenum is too tight, it can cause discomfort while eating, speaking, or brushing teeth. By removing it, we can effectively reduce this pain and discomfort.

The Frenectomy Procedure

At our office, we have the capability to conduct frenectomies on infants and children. This procedure is both convenient and flexible, as it can be performed using either local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the child's specific condition and severity. Our team of skilled doctors, led by Dr. Michael Cosmos and Dr. William Bacon, will delicately create a small incision in the frenulum and utilize specialized instruments to separate it from the surrounding tissue. Following this, the frenulum will either be cut or released, and the incision will be closed.

Frenectomy Recovery

After a frenectomy, the recovery period is usually short. Most children only feel slight discomfort and can resume their normal activities within a few days. It is important to note that the lip and tongue may have a different sensation after the procedure, and it may take some time for your child to adjust. In some cases, speech therapy or orthodontic treatment may be necessary to correct any misalignment caused by the condition.
