Laughing Gas
Nitrous Oxide is a colorless gas with a sweet smell that is safe to breathe.
For many years, Nitrous Oxide has been widely used in dentistry as a sedation method. During the procedure, the patient is provided with 50-70% oxygen, ensuring their safety.
One of the advantages of using Nitrous Oxide is that the patient can still breathe independently and maintain control over their bodily functions.
It is common for patients to experience mild amnesia and possibly fall asleep, resulting in not remembering everything that occurred during their dental appointment.
There are many advantages to using Nitrous Oxide
- Sedation depth can be adjusted to increase or decrease sedation.
- No "hangover" effect after sedation.
- Inhalation sedation is safe and does not have any side effects on the heart and lungs.
- Inhalation sedation effectively minimizes gagging.
- It quickly reaches the brain within 20 seconds and provides relaxation and pain relief within 2-3 minutes.
Reasons to not use Nitrous Oxide
If you have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it is not recommended to use Nitrous Oxide. While there are no significant contraindications for using nitrous oxide, it may be advisable to avoid it if you have emphysema, exotic chest problems, multiple sclerosis (M.S.), a cold, or any other breathing difficulties.
